Our beginning
Professional Seed Research began in 1987 with an idea: that careful observation, practical research, and personal service could give seed companies better information for making important decisions.
What started as Jim Dodd’s independent vision grew into a family business shaped by nearly four decades of hands-on corn research. Over those years, we have evaluated millions of seedlings, developed specialized testing and breeding methods, and worked alongside customers through changing technologies and markets.
The business has grown, but the approach remains personal. Programs are handled by experienced people who understand the work, communicate directly, and treat each customer’s seed and research objectives with care.
Why customers choose PSR
Some capabilities are developed through repetition and careful observation. Nearly four decades of evaluating corn—from emerging seedlings through mature plants—have given PSR a practical understanding that cannot be reduced to a standard protocol.
Seedling Growout®, Phenotype Select™, and Rapid Inbreeding® grew from PSR’s own research and experience. Each system was developed to solve a practical problem encountered in seed testing or corn breeding.
Customers communicate with the people responsible for their programs. That direct connection supports quicker answers, flexible planning, and a clearer understanding of each project’s objectives.
As an independent family business, PSR can structure testing and breeding programs around the customer rather than requiring the customer to fit a standardized system. Projects can range from individual seed tests to multigeneration research programs.
Depth beyond testing
Our work extends from seed quality evaluation and greenhouse breeding programs to independent corn genetics. PSR Global Genetics LLC develops and licenses proprietary maize germplasm, while the Corn Journal preserves decades of observations on corn biology, breeding, seed, and disease.
This broader experience strengthens the practical judgment behind every PSR testing and research program.
The principle remains
The methods have become more advanced, but the principle behind PSR remains much the same as it was in 1987.
